The benefits of working from home

by Ashia Nkontsa

If you haven’t started working from home, then you better adapt fast as it has been proven to be more productive and efficient to many people especially after the lockdown blues. Employers had to find ways to keep their businesses going and the work from home model was the best solution.

There are easy and efficient tips that you can adapt in order to increase your productivity while working from home. There are ways you can get accustomed to working at your own pace while meeting deadlines and being productive and efficient on the go.

Firstly, have an open mindset and be able to work from anywhere. Some companies have even adapted to employing people that are able to work independently on some days of the week.

Customize your devices; if you usually use your phone, make sure that you have all the relevant applications that you might need for work. For example, word document and your prefered email application. Always check that your devices are fully charged and make sure that you keep up to date with the loadshedding schedule so that you can plan ahead when your power goes out.

Make sure that when you are traveling you always have a pen and notepad with you so that you can draft down anything that comes to mind. A study by Forbes Magazine says, “while we can’t always control where we get to work, we can control our work environment. Personalizing your workspace in ways that you may not be able to in your corporate office can be fun and a good mental exercise to help you relax.”

According to Africa Inc, “Efficiency is doing the thing right. Effectiveness is doing the right thing.”

Working on the go as stated by South African employers:

  • You need to structure your day as you would at the office, that way your mind registers “work mode”.
  • Communication with your employer is crucial, meaning you have to clearly explain your work and progress.
  • You have to take breaks in between working and do something refreshing to increase your productivity.
  • Always keep up to date with load-shedding hours so you can be ahead of your work.
  • Be flexible and aware of your surrounding.
