Media personality Zizo Tshwete chats to us about why she has joined the SANBS’ (South African National Blood Service) blood donation drive and why it’s so important.

The SANBS blood drive is an important campaign that makes people aware of the importance of donating blood. Often people do not realise how important it is until they need blood or someone that they know and love needs it. As a person with a platform, I like to be involved in meaningful projects. This campaign results in people’s lives being saved daily – literally. I had to be a part of something that powerful. My aim with being a part of this campaign is not only awareness, but hopefully people actually committing to being regular, safe blood donors.

I have been a blood donor since I was in high school. One of the qualifying criteria is that you must be at least 16 years old, which means our young people can be a part of something important as well. My father got shot and was almost killed when I was a teenager. A blood transfusion saved his life. He has been a part of all my special moments since then including walking me down the aisle. That was made possible not only by his incredible doctors but also because of the donors who give of their blood to help people in need. I remain so grateful.
