Savoury dombolo

You can’t go wrong with a classic dombolo or steamed bread, and now you can update the classic with this delicious savoury take by Ntwenhle Gcabashe. 

Prep time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 60 minutes

Serves: 5–6

  • 4 cups self-raising flour
  • 1 tablespoon castor sugar
  • Salt and pepper
  • ½ cup sundried tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup ham, chopped
  • 1 cup Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1 egg
  • Handful fresh coriander, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) margarine, melted
  • 1 cup (250ml) Amasi

Cheese and beetroot mini breads

  1. In a bowl, sift flour, sugar and salt. Mix well.
  2. Add sundried tomato, ham, cheese, egg, coriander, margarine and Amasi. Mix well to form soft dough.
  3. Transfer into a lightly greased bowl.
  4. Add water in large saucepan. Place the greased bowl inside. Cover with a lid, and cook for 1 hour.
  5. Serve
