Handling Horrible In-Laws

by Boitumelo Mmakou

Dealing with horrible in-laws may be nothing like taking on the mean girl who was always bullying you in high school, or the constantly angry boss who hates your guts. But you must admit that the situation with them can be just as daunting as dealing with your in-laws. However, instead of sulking about being stuck with in-laws for good and cringing at the thought of spending Christmas holidays with them, you could always choose to be a lot more open minded.

Hopefully these five tips will be a great guide for you

BE THE BIGGER PERSON

Having in-laws who aren’t too fond of you can be emotionally draining as you may have to deal with their bickering; and if you have children this can affect your entire family. Instead of fighting back and allowing the problem to get worse, step back and reserve your comments. Be the mature one and let them act a fool. Once they grasp that you are not interested in their negative attitude they could stop.

COMMUNICATE

Often the in laws feel like they have the upper hand and permission from your spouse to do as they wish, this could leave you feeling like you have no voice. You can only know how effective your words are once you speak out. So, talk to your spouse about them and be open about everything that is happening.

TEAM UP WITH YOUR SPOUSE

Having someone on your side can boost your confidence and strength. The bond you have with your partner is important because you can fight off anything. And if he/she supports you, the in-laws have no right to interfere.

PLAY NICE

Being nice to someone who is horrible to you can never be easy. But once you trade every bad attitude they give you for kindness then you may just make it into their good books. Follow their rules; this should give them one less reason to dislike you.

KEEP CALM

Being upset and lashing out will not help you. Rather, take it easy. Think before you act on anything your in-laws say or do to you. After all, a calm mind is a healthy one.
