Tips on adding colour to your bedroom

While soothing neutral soothing are the popular choice for bedrooms, sometimes these rooms need a dash of colour to update them and bring them to life. Here are some clever ways to do it.

USE CONTRASTING COLOURS

This bedroom ticks all the boxes when it comes to adding colour. Amy Mitchell of Studio Mitchell painted the wall behind the bed a strong aqua shade to complement the orange cushion and balanced this with a fun patterned fabric on the armchair. For the headboard she chose a pattern that combined both colours and pulled the scheme together with an aqua geometric rug.

ADD SCATTER CUSHIONS

The easiest means of introducing colour is with scatter cushions. With minimal outlay you can change the look to suit the season; bright summery colours for the warmer months and soft textures and rich tones for winter. A clever idea is to use one colour or pattern on the front and another on the back so you can change the look whenever you want. Decor by Dear Zania Interiors.

LAYER ON THE THROWS AND QUILTS

This is very effective if you want to cosy up a bedroom in the winter months. Here Lee Moon Interiors started with a red throw to add rich inviting colour and layered this with a sumptuous fur throw that’s ideal for snuggling in.

PAINT THE BEDSIDE PEDESTAL

Sometimes adding colour can be as simple as painting the bedside pedestal. Metaphor Design chose a brilliant turquoise to energize this predominantly white bedroom.

UPHOLSTER THE BEDEND

For those who love white and neutral rooms but just want to add some interest, upholster the bench at the end of the bed in a simple one-colour pattern. Then add a matching scatter cushion in the centre of the bed. Décor by Amanda Walters Interiors.

CREATE A FEATURE WALL

A striking way to introduce colour and pattern is with a wallpapered feature wall. Simple yet eye catching, the blue and black stripes in the wallpaper in Leigh Finck’s bedroom are a modern contrast to the pressed ceiling and are echoed in the scatter cushions.
