How to gain the respect you deserve

Gaining respect is an important aspect of human interaction. It involves appreciating and acknowledging people’s positive qualities such as integrity and competence. However, respect is not automatically received, it is earned.

SocialSelf lists a few ways for you to gain the respect you deserve.

Present yourself well

Good self-presentation does not mean you should make adjustments to your physical features. Instead:

  • Dress appropriately based on the situation.
  • Wear well-fitting, clean clothes.
  • Be well-groomed (for example, shower, shave, etc).
  • Get regular haircuts.

Although clothing and looks seem shallow, they are important in certain situations as they shape how others see you.

Stand up for your beliefs and opinions

Disregarding our values to fit in is a form of self-disrespect. If someone questions what you have to say, be assertive yet polite, and try to be comfortable with the fact that some people will disagree with you.

Treat others how you want to be treated

Even if others are behaving in a manner you dislike, treat them with respect anyway. You never know what the person might be going through.

Use confident body language

Often, your body language speaks louder than words. Below are the characteristics of confident body language:

  • Keeping good eye contact when speaking and listening.
  • Good posture (no crossing your arms or hunching your shoulders).
  • Walking with a purpose (not wandering around aimlessly).
  • Keeping your chin up and eyes forward.
  • Using hand gestures when speaking (instead of keeping your hands in your pockets).

Keep promises

By keeping promises, you are showing people that you are a reliable person – a trait that will gain you respect. If you cannot meet commitments, do not make excuses but rather apologise and make amends.
