Foods to never eat on a first date

by Unathi Balele

First dates are exciting and nerve-wracking all at once. From choosing the perfect outfit to planning engaging conversations, there’s a lot to consider. But have you ever thought about the impact of your food choices on a first date?

While we all have our favourite dishes, some foods might not be the best choice when you’re trying to make a positive impression. Here are some foods you should consider avoiding on a first date to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Spicy Foods:

Spicy foods might excite your taste buds, but they can also cause discomfort, especially if you or your date have a sensitive stomach. Eating something overly spicy can lead to heartburn, indigestion, or even sweating, which can be quite embarrassing. It’s best to play it safe and avoid extremely spicy dishes on your first date.

Foods that Cause Bad Breath:

Aside from garlic and onions, certain foods can contribute to bad breath. These include strong cheeses, cured meats, and heavily seasoned dishes. While they may be tasty, they can linger in your mouth and leave an undesirable scent. Go for milder options or ensure you have a mint or chewing gum on hand to freshen your breath after the meal.

Foods that May Cause Allergic Reactions:

Before going on a first date, it’s essential to ask about any dietary restrictions or allergies your date might have. Avoid ordering foods that commonly trigger allergic reactions, such as peanuts, shellfish, or gluten-filled dishes, if you know your date is allergic or intolerant to them. Being mindful of their needs will demonstrate your thoughtfulness and consideration.

Foods with Strong Odors:

Some foods have a potent smell that can be off-putting to others. Examples include fish dishes, certain cheeses, or exotic spices. While you may enjoy these foods, they might not be ideal for a first date where you want to make a positive impression. Opt for dishes with milder aromas to keep the focus on your connection rather than your plate.
