Preventing boredom is important for maintaining mental well-being and productivity. Be it through entertainment, relaxation, or productivity, there are many way to beat the feeling commonly associated with disinterest.

According to Healthline, people experience boredom differently. Causes may include:

  • inadequate rest or nutrition;
  • lack of choice or control over daily activities;
  • lack of diversified recreational interests;
  • low levels of mental stimulation; or
  • poor perception of time.

Here are a few ways to prevent boredom as explained by The Cut.

1. Practise deep breathing

Don’t take this activity for granted. Slowing down and paying attention to your breathing can mentally and physically change the way you feel.

2. Recreate your favourite restaurant meal at home

No qualifications are required for this fun, boredom-preventing activity. All you need are the ingredients. This can be done alone or with a group of friends.

3. Make a memories album

Think again before throwing what you might consider ‘rubbish’ away. Gather the little things that made your day or night possible (such as receipts or movie stubs) and add it to your album.

4. Organise your cupboard

Having a space that is clean and organised can help you know just what you have, and where to find things while also keeping you relaxed.

5. Start watching a new reality series

Kick your feet up and start that series you have always wanted to watch.

6. Listen to a podcast

A relaxing way to prevent boredom, find an episode of a podcast that interests you, lie down, close your eyes, and listen.

7. Bake some goodies

Whether it be a loaf of bread or a batch of biscuits, head over to the kitchen to make a delicious snack.

8. Learn a fun and new trick

It’s not just dogs that can be taught a new trick! Learn to do the splits or how to juggle and impress your friends with your new skill.

9. Start crocheting

This activity is sure to keep your mind and hands busy. Find a video on YouTube that will guide you into making your own blanket, crop top, etc.

10. Play a video game

You don’t need a video game console to keep the boredom at bay. You can search for fun and free video games online too.
