Don’t Let Power Cuts End Your Fun

by Boitumelo Mmakou

So you and your family have been looking forward to the holidays, but with Eskom announcing more possible load shedding during the festive season, you’re seriously concerned about what you’ll do to have fun. Let’s face it: power outages are a huge possibility this Christmas season. But, don’t let it get in the way of spending proper quality time with your kids.

Here are some great ways you and your family can keep yourselves entertained during the festive season.

GET PHYSICAL

Maybe not having electricity can force you to step out of your box and try something different. Get active with outdoor activities such as dirt biking, horse riding and even rock climbing.

GET CREATIVE

With younger children this could be easy, as they love to get crafty. But for older folks this means they have to get in touch with their creative side. Nonetheless, initiate a fun creative experience. This could be, for example, a talent show where all family members take part, creating art work for your own museum at home or even doing paper mache projects.

POKER FACE

Playing Crazy Eight and Solitaire won’t just be good for your brain, but it’s a great way to polish up on your poker face, and if you and the family decide to make the game more challenging with money, then you may just score some extra cash.

MEET AND GREET

Having technology on our finger tips spoils us. We would rather Facebook a friend than actually meet with them for coffee. With the lights out, this can give you a chance to meet face-to-face with your loved ones and catch up.

YOU TIME

While the power is out, you could catch up with some sleep, the whole point of the holidays is to rest anyways, right? Maybe you could use this time to read a book, or write in your journal. Whatever you choose to do, just makes sure it ends with you having a smile on your face.
