5 ways to deal with depression

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

The New Year should be a great start for everyone and a time to feel positive. However this isn’t the case for everyone. We bring you five essential ways to cope…

By: Boitumelo Mmakou

According to Depression and Anxiety Support Group leader Driekie Moutinho, depression is more than just having the blues or feeling down. Everyone feels sad from time to time, but those feelings are usually short-lived, with no professional help required. However, when suffering from depression, it can negatively impact all areas of your life, including your job, finances, relationships, school work, social interactions and health.

As the year starts, some people can find it challenging as they may be held back by the problems they faced the previous year. The following ways can be used to conquer depression:

1. TALK TO SOMEONE

Don’t keep your feelings to yourself; rather share what you’re feeling with others to get help.

2. DON’T MAKE DRASTIC CHANGES

The pressure of a new year may affect you as you seek healing. Driekie advises you avoid making big decisions, such as changing jobs, until you’re feeling better.

3. DON’T BE IMPOSSIBLE

Don’t drive yourself too hard. Instead, learn to lower impossible standards especially when making your new year’s resolutions or setting goals for the year ahead.

4. RELAX, HONEY!

The main reason people suffer from depression is stress and overthinking. Use relaxation techniques to minimise stress and anxiety.

5. GET REAL

Often, when depressed and feeling fragile, people are advised to tread lightly around you, but this does not mean that they should lie to you. Not only should you accept any positive criticism and be honest with yourself. Be real with yourself. Set yourself a realistic daily routine and try to stick to it as much as possible.
