Tips to overcome motion sickness

If you are always feeling queasy and dizzy when you travel and wondering what might be the cause? You may be experiencing motion sickness.

Motion sickness is known as travel or car sickness, this is when you feel nauseous and dizzy from movement.

Motion sickness can happen when in rides such as a flight, boat, car, swing or a roller coaster. This usually happens because the brain senses the movement, but your eyes cannot see it which causes conflict between the brain and eye hence the dizziness says Dr. Rizwan Sohail, director of the Travel and Tropical Medicine Clinic at Mayo Clinic.

This condition is mainly popular between the ages of 2 and 12, however it can happen to anyone. Children are likely to experience this because they are still in development of the inner ear which is responsible for balance. With adults, it can be experienced, but symptoms are not as severe as to children, says experts.

There are ways to overcome this condition and help you feel yourself again. Below we will navigate through the tips that can help your brain and eyes stay in sync.

According to Dr. Carol Foster who is a vestibular rehabilitation specialist here are tips to overcome motion sickness for adults:

1. Sit in the front seat of a car or boat.
2. Face forward and focus on the horizon.
3. Try chewing on ginger or taking ginger supplements.
4. Take slow, deep breaths.
5. Try using an acupressure wristband.

According to pediatric Dr.Richa Thukral, the following tips may help kids overcome motion sickness:

1. Make sure your kid gets enough rest before the trip.
2. Encourage them to eat light meals before traveling.
3. Ask them to look out the window instead of reading or playing games.
4. Have them sit in the front seat if possible.
5. Bring some ginger candy or chewable tablets to help settle their stomach.

By getting enough rest, eating light meals before travelling and looking out the window you can lessen the dizziness and make your travelling better.
