Long road trips are food for the soul but for some, they’re unpleasant. These trips, meant to be loads of fun with family or friends, can easily be interrupted or totally ruined thanks to nobody’s friend, ever: car sickness.

Any form of travel may suddenly bring on motion sickness, which is a grueling experience. Motion sickness can cause symptoms ranging from mild nausea to dizziness, sweating, and vomiting. All while you’re just trying to make it to your destination in one place!

Fortunately, there are several ways to overcome car sickness. Here’s how to beat the queasiness.

Avoid heavy meals before traveling

One of the main causes of car sickness is an upset stomach. To avoid this, it’s essential to avoid eating heavy or greasy meals before traveling in a car. Instead, opt for lighter, low-fat snacks that are easier to digest, like crackers or toast.

Ginger or peppermint sweets help as well.

Sit in the front seat

If possible, try to sit in the front seat of the car. This position provides a better view of the road and reduces the chances of motion sickness. It also helps you to focus on the road ahead, which can distract you from the movement of the car.

Pro Tip: Avoid the middle seat at all costs. You will thank me later…

Horizon focus

If you are prone to car sickness, it’s essential to keep your eyes focused on the horizon. This helps your brain understand the movement of the car and reduces the chances of motion sickness. Avoid reading, playing games or watching videos while traveling.

Take breaks frequently

Taking breaks frequently and getting out of the car can help to reduce the feeling of nausea. Take a short walk, stretch, or breathe in some fresh air. This can help you to relax and refocus, reducing the risk of car sickness.

Consider medication

If you have tried all the above strategies and are still experiencing car sickness, consider taking medication. There are several over-the-counter and prescription medications that can help to reduce the feeling of nausea and dizziness. Consult a medical professional to try these.

Try acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing technique that involves applying pressure to specific points on the body. Some studies have suggested that acupressure can help to reduce the symptoms of motion sickness. You can use a wristband or try pressing the P6 point on the inner wrist to relieve nausea.

Pro Tip: Don’t look downwards. Avoid reading a book or even being on your phone.

Car sickness can be a miserable experience, but it is possible to overcome it. You want to enjoy your trip and have it be as comfortable as possible.

Remember to always listen to your body!
