Having a case of hiccups can be quite disturbing. Although it lasts for a few minutes, people have used many methods to end their hiccups quickly. If you do not like to be startled to get rid of your hiccups, see below a few home remedies.

Singultus (the medical term for hiccups) occurs when the diaphragm and intercostal muscles suddenly contract involuntarily, explains Medical News Today. The voice box (larynx) simultaneously contracts and the vocal folds close, effectively blocking the flow of air.

Below are three categories along with examples of home remedies for dealing with hiccups by Medical News Today.

Breathing and posture

Try one or all of the following techniques:

  • Breathe in and hold your breath for 10 seconds. Inhale two more times before exhaling.
  • Breathe into a paper bag. Be sure not to cover your head with the bag.
  • Bring your knees to your chest and hug them.
  • Compress your chest gently by leaning forward.

Consuming foods and drinks

Try one or all of the following techniques:

  • Gargle iced water.
  • Place a couple of drops of vinegar in your mouth.
  • Place some granulated sugar on your tongue and swallow it.
  • Slowly slip some cold water.
  • Bite a slice of lemon.

Pressure points

Try one or all of the following techniques:

  • Pull on your tongue gently. This may stimulate the vagus nerve and ease diaphragm spasms.
  • Press lightly on your diaphragm.
  • Place gentle pressure on each side of your nose while swallowing.
