4 Natural ways to treat diarrhoea

Running to the loo every few minutes is no joke, and experiencing the pain that comes with diarrhoea is no laughing matter either. Instead of reaching for the prescribed medication given to you by your doctor, opt for a cheaper way by soothing your insides naturally.

The publication Health provides four natural ways to treat diarrhoea naturally.

Rehydrate

One of the best ways to treat diarrhoea is to drink plenty of fluids. Adults with the ailment should drink water, fruit juices, sports drinks, cooldrinks without caffeine, and salty broths.

Avoid exercise

This might be a plus if you do not consider yourself a fitness bunny. When you have diarrhoea, it is best to avoid strenuous workouts as this may dehydrate you even more.

If you are one that has been bitten by the fitness bug, avoid high-fibre, gas-producing foods and fruits before your run, and stay hydrated.

Drink tea

A study found that combining chamomile flower extract, myrrh, and coffee charcoal helped with acute diarrhoea. On the other hand, lemongrass tea helps calm your gut. “It doesn’t necessarily affect diarrhoea, but it can help with cramps,” says Dr Schiller, a programme director of the gastroenterology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine.

Use ginger

For centuries, people have been using ginger to treat stomach pains. However, some people find that ginger causes diarrhoea and other digestive issues like gas or heartburn. Although a rare occurrence, a 2019 review found that ginger may cause mild gastrointestinal side effects (like burping, heartburn or gastrointestinal discomfort.)
