The secret to gorgeous dreadlocks

by Keletso Modisakeng

By: Keletso Modisakeng
From biblical men, such as Samson, who had locks for strength to Rastafarians and the famous Marley family, dreadlocks have evolved to trendy hairstyles that suit any personality. Jata, locks or dreads as they are well-known around the world, are twisted hair that locks into coils. Andrew Mafafo, salon manager at Knox Revolutions in Randburg, shares tips on how to care for your locks.

  • People must stop the misconception that dreadlocks are dirty. Keeping your hair clean is important.
  • Start your dreadlocks at a professional salon because this foundation will determine how your hair takes shape when it grows, and the hairstyles you can do.
  • Massaging your scalp is a great way to relax, and helps your hair grow faster.
  • Once a week after washing your hair, stimulate growth by applying some scalp treatment onto your head, and gently massage with the tip of your fingers for five minutes.
  • Protect your hairline and locks by covering your hair when you sleep.
  • Dreadlocks don’t vary from other hairstyles; night care is important and will help your hair look fresh.
  • The best care for your dreadlocks is to find a great stylist to help care for your hair, and give tips on what to do at home.
