2014 Celeb Hair Tales

by Keletso Modisakeng

2014 has been an interesting year and as it draws to an end, we look back at our favourite celebs’ hairstyles for 2014 and some that should just never have happened.

Anele

The radio and TV personality took us on a full 360 degree hair turn. Anele Mdoda started the year with a pixie cut, and she’d add colour every now and again. Sometimes she curled it and then when we weren’t look, she shaved it all off for a tradtional rite-of-passage ceremony. We love the current growth, with a dash of curl for character.

Boity

Boity didn’t just change her hair, she transformed it. We were so over the short brown bob that she became known for. She went natural, short and platinum just before spring broke. A lady should never be restricted by her hair and that’s what Boity showed us when she went from blonde to a blood red weave with dark roots. You go girl, we love the new hair.

Cassper Nyovest

When we think of hair trends we think of women, never men. Cassper didn’t only make music waves this year, he’s take on his hair was definitely to notice. Nyovest distinguished his look with his beard to the braided tail. The Chinese martial art hair was not our cup coffee but the golden blonde hair and beard is worse. We know he did it for his album going gold but we can’t help but wonder if he wasn’t copying his ex-lover Boity.

Lerato Kganyago

When you think of Lerato you think of great weave and that’s it. She has gone brown, blonde, added highlights or just remained black but gave her hair a great break by cutting her hair. We love the Pixie hair which opens up her face more and gives a playful feel to her image.

Nandi Mngoma

The flawless songstress shocked us when she didn’t put any effort into her image when she rocked a plain high ponytail plate. Nandi is the girl who made everyone wish they could go bold because it looked so great on her so the high ponytail was our least favourite. We not sure if Lupita Nyong’o or Nandi did it first but all we know is that Nandi is rocking the fade with a line. She made this hairstyle trend to the max that going to a hair salon and asking for “the Nandi” is a thing now.

Pearl Modiadie

Pearl is our own dark beauty. She has always looked fabulous. She, too, joined the pixie cut crew. She’s now rocking pink hair and we absolutely love. It’s not a trend that will work on everyone.

Pearl Thusi

Pearl’s afro is the envy of all girls and she still styles it up on occasion. We loved her with the blonde “Boom shaka” braids and the elegant slick ponytail. She graced us with silver braids that only she can make work. We can’t wait to see more of her edgy looks to come.

Poppy Ntshongwana

One would think because Poppy has a heart shaped face that styling her hair would never fail. She proved us wrong when she had her shaved hair, with the left over hair on top. That was our least favourite, followed by her bob wig. Her fresh start by going bald is daring, now we’ve fallen in love with the big curls.
