The summer season is upon us, which means those unbearable heat waves are about to strike. It is also a time for you to rethink your skincare routine and adjust it according to the summer season.

According to Dawn “our skins behave differently in the heat than in the cold. The heat and sun flushes the moisture out of your skin. So it’s imperative to step-up your skincare routine to look great this summer.”

Here are some tips to help you get ready for our favourite time of year:

You should moisturize

The air isn’t as dry in the summer as it is in the winter and your skin can still get dry out in summer.

According to Healthline, it is important to moisturise with products that contain SPF as they help provide an extra layer of protection. However, you should still apply sunscreen.

Get to know your soap

Heat makes our skin produce more oil, so it can be tempting to wash your body with a strong cleanser. However, Dawn Body Lotion says that “this may do more harm than good because while it’s good to remove excess oil. It’s also NOT good to strip the skin of oil completely. The rule of thumb is, if your skin feels tight, your soap is too astringent. Rather opt for pH neutral cleansers and soap that remove the dirt but maintain your skin’s delicate balance.”

Reduce make-up (go lighter on the make-up)

During the summer season wearing tons of makeup adds an extra layer to your face.

And, if you sweat, your makeup will come off more easily.

Berry Goldman,  MD, an NYC-based board certified dermatologist, say that we should embrace the season and pare down our makeup routine.

“Wearing less makeup lets the skin breathe,” Goldman says. “It’s like how sleeping without socks lets your feet breathe. Makeup can also be clogging.”

Use water

Moisturise your skin from the inside out by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. It’s the easiest and cheapest way to keep your skin happy and hydrated.

Use sunscreen

As they say, save the best for last! The most important thing is to use sunscreen.

Offset the harmful effects of UV rays on skin by wearing a decent sunblock with a high SPF. Wearing sunscreen everyday will prevent premature aging and sunspots for a more even and fresh-looking skin tone.
