How to find a perfectly fitted bra

Studies suggest that wearing a properly fitted bra can provide essential support for breast tissue, reducing discomfort, pain, and sagging over time.

Bras help maintain breast shape, improve posture, and minimise physical strain during daily activities. They can even enhance your confidence if you’re feeling insecure about hanging or saggy breasts – which, by the way, is completely natural!

Struggling to find your perfect fit? Here are 12 tips to take into consideration when you’re on the hunt for a bra that fits you properly:

Know your measurements

Start by getting a professional bra fitting. Many lingerie stores offer free fittings, and knowing your accurate size is crucial. Your body can change over time, so it’s a good idea to get measured regularly.

If you’re in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, or Cape Town, visit Liza Clifford for a professional fitting.

Understand bra sizing

Bra sizes consist of two components: the band size (e.g., 32, 36) and the cup size (e.g., A, B, C). The band should sit comfortably around your ribcage, and the cups should encase your breasts without any over-spillage or gaps.

Know your style

Bras come in various styles, including underwire (which, for some, can be uncomfortable when the wire lining presses into the skin, or breaks through fabric), wireless, push-up, sports bras, bralettes, and more.

Choose the style that suits your needs and preferences. Different outfits may require different bra styles, so it’s always good to have a mix of different styles available!

Sexy, sporty, stylish

Consider the primary purpose of the bra. Are you looking for everyday comfort, support during physical activity, or something for a special occasion? Different bras are designed for different purposes. There are great bras out there that double-up as functional and stylish. Those are always winners.

Is the fabric comfortable?

Pay attention to the fabric of the bra. Soft, breathable materials are great for everyday wear, while stretchy materials can be comfortable for sports bras.  If you’ve got sensitive or reactive skin, opt for bras made from hypoallergenic materials like cotton or bamboo. Look for seamless or tagless designs to minimise irritation.

Adjustability is a must

Always check the bra straps and their adjustability! Straps should sit comfortably on your shoulders without digging in. Adjustability is essential for achieving a proper fit, especially if you’re investing in a bra that is meant to last you, make sure it can accommodate for changes in your body.

Get some closure

Bras typically have hook-and-eye closures in the back, but some have front closures or pull-over designs. Choose the closure type that you find most convenient and comfortable.

Be aware of the band size

The bra’s band should provide most of the support, so make sure it’s snug but not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers under the band without it digging into your skin.

Cup it

A full cup provides ample coverage and support, making it ideal for larger breasts. Demi cups offer a flattering lift and are suitable for lower-cut tops. Plunge bras work well with deep-necked outfits, enhancing cleavage while remaining discreet. Tailor your choice to your breast shape and wardrobe needs.

Try it on, when you can

Always try bras on before purchasing, if possible. Even if you know your size, different brands and styles may fit differently.

Move around

When trying on a bra, move around to ensure it stays in place and provides the necessary support. Raise your arms, bend over, and twist to see how the bra feels during various movements.

Go for quality

While high-quality bras may be more expensive, they often provide better support and last longer. Consider investing in a few well-made bras for your wardrobe.
