5 Reasons to include honey in beauty routines

Honey has long been known for its natural healing properties. So, it is a no-brainer to add nature’s gift to your beauty routine.

According to Carly Stein, founder of Beekeeper’s Naturals, the best type of honey to use for beauty should be raw and unpasteurised. Carly also recommends using buckwheat honey due to its high antioxidant levels, explains Women’s Health.

The publication consulted a few skin, beauty and honey experts. Below are five reasons why including honey in beauty routines is beneficial for your skin.

Heals wounds

The natural antiseptic properties found in honey not only protect wounds but assists in preventing infections too. The beneficial properties reduce scarring and cut down on healing time.

Treats acne spots

An anti-inflammatory, buckwheat honey helps to reduce the redness and swelling of pimples. Its antibacterial properties can also help fight acne-causing bacteria especially if it is infused with propolis. Says Ildi Pekar, celebrity facialist, “Also, because honey keeps the skin well-hydrated and balanced, it helps control the production of oil.”

Moisturises the skin

Due to its moisturising and soothing effects, raw honey can hydrate the skin, while leaving it soft, radiant, and glowing, explains Ildi. “The sugars in honey act as natural humectants and emollients that increase the water content and reduce dryness in the skin even after they have been washed off.”

Exfoliates the skin

Not only is honey a moisturiser, but an exfoliator too. Carly says that since raw honey crystalises over time, the tiny granules act as a gentle exfoliant. The granules break down once in contact with water, and the heat of your skin makes for a gentler scrub.

Can be used as a hair conditioner

Celebrity hair artist Felix Fischer says, “Honey is naturally a perfect conditioner because it’s a humectant and retains and attracts moisture, keeping your hair feeling smooth and healthy.” Felix adds, “Your strands will feel soft, nourished, and have plenty of life and bounce.”
