From his successful, sold-out show at the Madison Square Garden in New York to his outfit of tribute, the buzz surrounding Black Coffee will not be quieting down anytime soon.

The world-renowned deejay, whose name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, made sure not to exclude his loved ones from his show by having American fashion designer Mike Amiri construct a jacket to represent the women in his life.

Taking to his social media, Black Coffee shared a video explaining the meaning behind the women depicted on the garment.

“For me, this is such an important piece because I am literally carrying my people to Madison Square Garden.”

On the jacket, there are three women – one Zulu woman and two Xhosa women (his grandmothers and mother). “The one in the middle is younger, that being my mother. You know, being who I am in the family, I wanted to preserve the history of our family.”

Black Coffee then shares, “The people that carried me, the people that raised me, I am literally bringing them to witness the biggest moment of my life right now.”

Mike then shares that he felt humbled that Black Coffee reached out to him to partner with him on creating the look for the performance. “One of the best feelings I get when creating is putting something together with this much meaning and that’s this important to someone,” says Mike.

“He had shown me a painting that reflected them [the three women], and I wondered [if there] was a way to incorporate that into the look.”
