by Bongiwe Mati

Umhlobo Wenene FM celebrates 63 years in existence this year. The SABC-owned radio station prides itself as a “trusted Friend to all South Africans who speak and understand isiXhosa.”

Previously called Radio Xhosa, Umhlobo Wenene is the second-biggest African language radio station and the second-most-loved radio brand in the country.

The station plans to host its 63rd birthday celebration where they will celebrate this milestone with their listeners.

Umhlobo Wenene FM Drive and Metro FM’s T’bo Touch of The Touchdown, crossed over yesterday and listeners from both stations could hear them live. UWFM Drive presenters Luyanda Gidane also known as Luks, and Zintle Mbusi shared with their and Metro FM listeners more details on the station’s birthday event.

Luks and Zintle shared that the event themed Impolo Yabahlobo (the relaxation of Friends) will be held at Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium in East London on May 27. They also shared that; it will be a picnic kind of event with activities for the whole family and performances from, Vusi Nova, Nathi, Ntando and Metro FM song of the year winner Bethusile to name a few.

Loyiso Bala who is the station’s business manager spoke to Sunday World and echoed the presenters’ words. He was quoted saying, “The upcoming station event is much more than just an occasion for good food and great music.”

“It is an opportunity for the station to fulfil its brand promise of fostering lasting connections with its listeners beyond the confines of the studio, in a way that is both meaningful and enjoyable.”

He also added, “We hope to create a fun and engaging experience that strengthens the bond between the station and its audience, ultimately leading to a stronger and more loyal listener.”
