Why we love true crime media

by Kaylum Keet

True crime media has gained significant popularity in recent years, from podcasts to TV shows and documentaries. Many people find themselves fascinated by real-life cases of murder, mayhem, and mystery. But what draws us to these dark and often gruesome stories?

For some, true crime media satisfies a deep human curiosity about the darker side of humanity. We are intrigued by the psychology of criminals and their motives for committing such heinous acts. We want to understand what drives someone to take the life of another.

Others are drawn to true crime media because it provides a sense of catharsis. Through these stories, we can experience fear and horror from a safe distance. It allows us to process our own anxieties and fears in a controlled environment.

True crime media also satisfies our innate desire for justice. We want to see criminals brought to justice and held accountable for their actions. True crime stories often provide a clear resolution, giving us a sense of closure and satisfaction.

Additionally, true crime media can be educational. By examining real-life cases, we can learn about the criminal justice system and how it works. We can also learn about the warning signs of potentially dangerous individuals and how to stay safe.

The popularity of true crime media can be attributed to our fascination with the darker side of humanity, our desire for justice, a sense of catharsis, and our thirst for knowledge. While the genre may not be for everyone, it provides valuable insight into the world of crime and its impact on society.
