Sho Madjozi drops new album in time for the festive season

by Koketso Masuluke
Sho Madjozi drops new album

Maya Wegerif popularly known to her fans as Sho Madjozi is a poet and rapper who is fluent in various languages such as her native language Xitsonga, Swahili, Zulu, Sepedi as well as French, just to name a few. She first hit the commercial music scene when she featured on Okmaloomkoolkat’s 2017 hit Gqi, and DJ Maphorisa’s Probleme.

On her music

Raised in Shirley, a village in Limpopo, she later moved to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania as a teenager. Having studied, travelled, and lived in the US, the UK and other countries in Africa and the world at large, it is no wonder that Sho Madjozi has such a global mindset when it comes to the type of work she creates. A global mindset and experience which you are taken through when listening to her album ‘Limpopo Champions League’.

“Having taken a route that no one expected, something which is also very apparent in my album as I have created songs which no one was expecting me to create more especially because the genre which I have chosen is looked down on by many people who think that it’s bubblegum music and that it’s stupid. At the end of the day, it isn’t my place to tell me what they need to think of me, or how they should perceive me. My role is to create music that is able to resonate with various people regardless of where in the world they are listening to my album from.” says Sho Madjozi

On her personal style

Not only is Sho Madjozi a rapper and poet, but she is also a TV personality and an upcoming fashion mogul who believes that we need to stop trying to be acknowledged by western culture and we need to own our African look, our heritage, our style and in that way we will be able to move past trying to compete with the west and chart our own paths where we are able to celebrate, acknowledge, and own our style and Africanness.
