Foundation 101

by Keletso Modisakeng

Foundation is the base of all make-up, and if done incorrectly can ruin the entire look. Your foundation is the beginning of everything, no matter what brand you use or look you want to achieve. Estee Lauder’s make-up artist Chris Williams shares facts and tips you need to know for your perfect make-up bases.

foundation-

  • When choosing a foundation, you need to get the correct shade so it looks natural. If.your foundation gives you a grey (ashy) look, then the colour is incorrect.
  • A radiant and fresh look is a great achievement with foundation, and the spring/summer trend is still dewy.
  • A dewy look is a full coverage with foundation, with a natural glow (no shine).
  • Ask for assistance to try three different brands and shades on your face before purchasing your foundation.
  • Always try foundation on your face and never on the back of your hand because your hands are exposed to more sun and are darker than your face. Do not test your foundation on your chest either as most women wear perfume there and this will affect the foundation colour.
  • Always use a fresh, clean and dry brush or sponge to apply foundation. A wet sponge does not help your foundation last longer, but changes the formulation of the product.
  • Always buy a foundation that accommodates your skin problems and needs. E.g. if you have an oily skin, then you will buy a mattifying foundation while mature skin will need a firming foundation.
  • Always use a loose powder to touch up your make-up and not a press powder foundation because this will build layers on your face and give you a cake face
  • Avoid using a mineral powder on top of your make-up because this will give your face a shiny look.
