LeAnne Dlamini – songstress on a mission

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

LeAnne Dlamini, the multi award-winning RnB singer, chats to us about her new album and sisterhood movement.

1. Music has always been a huge part of my life. I started singing at a very young age, and knew then that one day, I would be a singer. Seeing the Bills, Bills, Bills music video by Destiny’s Child as a teenager pushed me to explore my singing career enthusiastically.

2. I sing because music can take people to a beautiful place. It takes you on a journey and also evokes many emotions. I love telling stories through music. It’s all about sharing experiences.

 3. My third album – Warrior – showcases my mature sound. I have grown musically, and can proudly say that this is the best album I’ve ever recorded! I have a deep connection with the musical notes and lyrics in all the songs. Sincere music lovers will enjoy my album.

4. Winning two SAMAs in 2010 was an amazing experience. I look back at those moments with joy because it was an honour to see that my music is loved and appreciated. Winning those awards assured me that I was moving in the right direction.

5. Apart from singing, I’m also a social activist with my End Girl Hate campaign. My two daughters motivated me to start this campaign because I want them to have a healthy relationship with other girls and women. This campaign encourages girls and women to support and inspire each other. I have also just launched it in Botswana, and hope that the sisterhood movement can continue globally in order to empower more girls and women.
