Good Food: Stanley Beer Yard

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

Our Digital Editor recently visited the Stanley Beer Yard in Joburg for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She breaks down why here.

The Atmosphere

Stanley Beer Yard is situated at 44 Stanley in Joburg and if you’ve ever been there you already know what the vibe is. It’s chilled, relaxed and comfortable. A few pockets of people are shopping in the boutiques while others relax at restaurants; chowing down on some food. Stanley Beer Yard is the best eatery there in my opinion. It’s got a large outside area as well as a comfortable inside (which was key since it started raining while I was there).

The crowd consists of people in their late 20s and early 30s. Some are there to watch the game (screened inside the restaurant), while others are there to hang out with friends while listening to live music outside.

The deco is very shabby chic. Rustic wooden benches and chairs covered with colourful scatter cushions and some antique furniture. Some thought has clearly gone into the deco but it doesn’t feel like they were trying too hard, which is great.

The Food

The menu is unpretentious. It’s bar food but much tastier and more experimental. My friend ordered the ribs and thoroughly enjoyed them.

I had the beef trinchado which was incredible! I couldn’t stop eating it, even when I felt like I would burst.

To Drink

It is a beer yard so of course the biggest draw card is their wide selection of beer. I got to sample a few of the variances they had on offer and was quite impressed. If you’re not a beer lover though, don’t despair. I found their gin and tonics especially delicious.

Cost Factor

Their prices are fair. It’s not the cheapest place to eat in the CBD however it’s also not ridiculously expensive either.

Perfect For

Hanging out with friends. There are long benches outside that are ideal for group gatherings and there are also board games that are great for game nights. I definitely recommend it and will be visiting again.
