5 minutes with Sma Mathibeli

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

Gone are the days when Sma Mathibeli was just an actress. She is now the proud owner of a restaurant. She chats to us about reinventing herself as a successful businesswoman and opening a restaurant called, Unique Cafe in Durban.

1.Many people know me for the role I played as Madi in SABC drama series Zone 14. But I am also a wife, mother and a believer that all things are possible. I’m the CEO of the Calvin and Family Group, which specialises in construction, hospitality and marketing, among other services. I am also the content producer for Ukhozi FM’s afternoon drive time show, as well as weekend traditional music show. I’m a diverse creative person who loves exploring many avenues.

2. I’m an innovative person. I wanted to be more than just an actress, so I started a communication company with my friend Ester Noir. I later decided to work with my husband to grow the business because he has more experience in the field. It’s been an exciting journey.

3. I recently opened a restaurant in Umhlanga, Durban. The restaurant, Unique Lifestyle Cafe, offers a posh dining experience in a classy and accommodating environment. Our meals range from braai to sophisticated dinners. I made sure the menu is comprehensive, and I have dubbed it the Afrotalian menu. We also stock award-winning wines and beers.

4. Finding a way to attract people to a restaurant can be challenging. People already have restaurants they frequent. I have taken the challenge of attracting new customers, and making my restaurant a popular and preferred choice. I have plans in place to ensure that happens.

5. I have learnt a lot from starting a restaurant.  I now know that I have to invest time into a business and hiring experts in the field to guide the restaurant in the right direction. It’s important to research on the restaurant business, and do things differently from others in the industry.
