Deciding on a hair colour

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

Are you ready to colour but not sure how to go about it? Spoilt Hair & Nails Salon Stylist, Zainab Ismail, gives us insight on what to consider when colouring your hair.

There are many aspects to consider.

  • You would have to take into consideration your daily make up routine. It’s important that your make up matches your hair. If you know you love nude make-up then go with a colour to match that.
  • Think about how much of a change you want – dramatic change or a slight change, once you have decided on that, choose a colour.
  • Collect pictures of hair styles and colours you like. Give yourself a lot of options.
  • Think about how often you willing to go to a salon for touch ups
  • Decide if you want a haircut too and how dramatic it would be
  • Check your skin tone and eye colour. It’s also important to make sure that your skin tone goes well with your hair. If you have a dark shade, rather go for colours like brown and light blonde instead of bright colours like red.

Tips on colouring

  • Make sure that your hair is chemical-free: You have to cut out the relaxer if you choose to colour as your hair is more likely to break if it’s relaxed. Make sure your hair is healthy.
  • Don’t colour your hair after washing it: Colouring freshly washed hair can cause scalp irritation, so it’s recommended to start with unwashed hair. Also avoid heavy styling products a few days before colouring to ensure even results.
  • Once your hair is in a healthy state, you can reach for that eye-catching colour.
  • Always keep your hair mosturised: It’s important to take very good care of your hair. You need a lot of moisture because hair tends to dry quickly once coloured. Condition your hair once a week for 20 minutes with a cap and do a moisturizing treatment every three days.

3. Golden blonde like Khanya Mkangisa (She shot with Bona with the same hair colour)

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~ Marianne Williamson
