5 Mins With Aya Mpama

by Boitumelo Mmakou

Aya has been a phenomenon in the music industry, with a voice like no other. She has also dabbled in acting. Now, she is the host of one of South Africa’s most watched TV programme, My Perfect Wedding. The presenter chats to us about her gig and why people should stay glued to the screen.

aya2It’s no secret that viewers of the show were sad to see Tumi Morake go. Did this put any pressure on you to do better for the hit reality series?

I absolutely felt the pressure! Tumi had done a great job and going into the show, I had big shoes to fill. I’m also my worst critic – I push myself to do better. So, coming into the show I had already been working hard to do a great job like Tumi.

How has the negative backlash from audiences affected you?

It has taken some time to adjust to being on the reality show, but I am settled now. I think with time, the audience will also adjust. It will take some time for others to fall in love with me. aya

Can you tell us more about what happens behind the scenes?

Once the producers have chosen which wedding we will showcase, we have a production meeting a few days before meeting the couple. Once that is done, I am then introduced to the bride and groom before we shoot. Most of what is seen on television will be my interactions with them as they prepare for their wedding.

What have you learnt so far from doing the show?

I have been really amazed by how people have opened up to me about their lives. All the couples we have shot have been very accommodating.

As a single lady, what are your thoughts on love?

It is fundamental not to compromise yourself for someone, because if they love you enough, they will accept you for who you are. Do not ever settle just because you don’t want to be alone; stay true to you.
