African Beauty

by Keletso Modisakeng

Africa Day is celebrated annually on 25 May in recognition of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963. You don’t have to wear your full traditional attire to stand proud. Bonang Matheba and Bonnie Mbuli show us how to add a touch of Africa to your outfit.

From culture to religion and fashion, African women have been wearing turbans for generations. Create your own layered turban like Queen B by following these easy steps:

How to

  • Tie your hair, then wear a beanie to help add volume
  • Place your scarf over your beanie and tie at the back of your head.
  • Create the layer effect by wrapping the tails of the scarf from the left to the back.
  • Take the second tail and wrap it from right to left.
  • The length of your scarf will determine how many times you repeat this. Pin the tips with a bobby or safety pin for security.

Give your nails some home-grown art like Bonnie.

Step1: File your nails evenly so they all look the same before you apply your nail polish.

Step 2: Apply two coats of your nail polish of choice as your base colour. Always make sure you cover the whole nail with the nail paint to give it a rich solid finish.

Step 3: Use a small brush or the rounded bottom of a bobby pin to create your map of Africa and other decor on your nails.

Step 4: Apply a clear top coat over all your nails to help the designs last longer and prevent the nail polish from chipping.
