5 Minutes With Thando Thabethe

by Amanda Ndlangisa

As we stated in our January issue, Thando Thabethe is one of 2015’s women to watch. The actress, presenter and radio DJ is proving us right with her new role on Generations: The Legacy. We chat to Thando about her new role.

How are you feeling about this?

I’ve already been privileged enough to star alongside the talent that is Manaka Ranaka, and I’m so thrilled with the reception both the cast and crew have given me so far. I am an actress through and through, and cannot wait to show South Africa what I’m capable of. I even had to cut my hair for this role. I literally sobbed but that is how invested I am in depicting Nolwazi.

Please tell us more about your character, Nolwazi?

She is smart, witty and business savvy. I’m super excited to play this role because I have never done a role like this before. Nolwazi is a girl born and bred in the township. She, however, has an advantage. She’s got an education and a fascination for people different from her and her background so she moves comfortably amongst rich, educated or powerful people. She reads and is well spoken. In a room she’s the one with the brightest smile, the most confident and never apologises for her presence. She is passionate, intelligent, playful and lively. She’s not one for drama and would rather focus on achieving her goals and getting ahead than be involved in conflict. But when disrespected or provoked, she is hot-tempered and will get her claws out if you step out of line. She’s loyal to her friends and expects exactly the same from them. Those who are will always been rewarded with warmth. She is a great gal pal. But she will destroy anyone who betrays her or hurts the people she loves.

How did you get the role?

I auditioned about two weeks ago and got the call the following day. I kind of expected to get the role; I worked really hard on my audition and was hoping I would get it.

What can your fans expect from you?

They can expect a whole different side of me.
