Artificial intelligence (AI) has surfaced as one of the most revolutionary and groundbreaking technologies in the 21st century. Although it has been proven beneficial in many industries, there are a few challenges that come with it.

According to Forbes, the first form of AI – an automated checkers bot – was created in England in 1951 by Cristopher Strachey from the University of Manchester.

Now, there are many forms of AI hitting the mainstream, all having their significant benefits and drawbacks, states LinkedIn.

Here are a few pros and cons to consider when looking at AI.

Pros

It is efficient

While humans may take a few days to complete a specific task, AI will be able to finish the task in minutes, if not seconds. AI is also able to complete tasks more accurately than humans, resulting in greater productivity, lower expenses, and higher customer satisfaction, states LinkedIn.

It is innovative

“AI is expediting innovation in fields including healthcare, transportation, and education,” explains the above-mentioned publication. ” It enables previously impractical discoveries, goods, and services.”

Experiences can be personalised

LinkedIn explains that AI can create personalised experiences for individuals in areas like marketing and healthcare, leading to better outcomes through tailored recommendations and treatments.

Cons

Lacks creativity

Forbes states that AI’s decision-making process is based on the past. The answers derived from this process may not fit with the innovative ways needed to solve problems or answer questions.

Ethics

The possibility of abuse and misuse may come into question when using AI. For example, using the technology for monitoring and surveillance has been criticised for the potential invasion of people’s privacy, states LinkedIn.

Reduces employment

While AI can create more job opportunities, it can also make fewer jobs available. Says Forbes, “The important point to keep in mind is that AI in its current iteration is aiming to replace dangerous and repetitive work. That frees up human workers to do work which offers more ability for creative thinking, which is likely to be more fulfilling.”
