Fun ways to celebrate Heritage Day

The 24th of September is the official day that the whole of South Africa gets to celebrate the cultural wealth of our nation. Celebrating the day comes in many forms, with some listed below.

Here are a few fun ways to enjoy the national public holiday.

Visit a local museum

Here are a few museums located in South Africa for you to visit:

  • The Iziko Museums of South Africa
  • District Six Museum in Cape Town
  • Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg
  • Phansi Museum in Durban
  • Albany Museum in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown)
  • and many more!

Learn a phrase or two in another local language

Immerse yourself into another culture this Heritage Day (or any day) by appreciating other South African languages. You can start by learning greetings or asking the person how they are in their mother tongue. This is also a great way to show respect to your fellow South Africans.

Host a braai and feast on local dishes you haven’t tried before

Gather your family and friends and host a braai. Instead of having the usual salads (like the iconic potato salad) and desserts, why not include a few side dishes from other local cultures? For example, for those who have not tried it, enjoy your chicken and chops with dombolo (bread made steamed in a pot). For dessert, enjoy a bowl of boeber (a traditional Cape Malay sweet, milk drink, made with vermicelli, sago, sugar, and flavoured with cardamom, stick cinnamon and rose water).

Support local businesses or artisans

Heritage Day is a public holiday. So, why not go out shopping and support local businesses? After all, local is lekker!
