The amazing health benefits of passion fruit

A tropical fruit found in South African gardens, passion fruit has a tough, purple outer rind with a deliciously sweet, seed-filled centre. Despite its small size and (sometimes) minimal contents, this fruit is packed with beneficial nutrients for your health.

Other than South Africa, the fruit grows in warm climates located in South America, Australia, and India from the passiflora tropical vine, explains Medical News Today. The health publication also states passion fruit comes from the passiflora edulis species, but there are different species which are sometimes referred to as granadilla.

Let’s get into the benefits of this tasty fruit provided by Medical News Today.

Highly nutritious

Passion fruit is rich in vitamin A (important for the immune system, skin, and vision) and vitamin C (an important antioxidant). It also contains phosphorus, niacin, and vitamin B-6, all needed to keep the body healthy.

Fibrous

The fruit contains a lot of dietary fibre which helps to regulate the digestive system and keeps the gut healthy by preventing bowel disorders and constipation.

Supports heart health

When eaten with fibrous seeds, passion fruit can assist in removing excess cholesterol from the inside of blood vessels. Furthermore, including a good amount of fibre in your diet can also reduce the risk of heart disease.

Boosts the immune system

Due to its high levels of vitamin C, passion fruit helps protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Vitamin C, therefore, boosts the immune system, helping the body absorb more iron from plant-based foods. It may also improve the body’s ability to fight off infections.
