Thuso Mbedu wins another international accolade

World renowned actress, Thuso Mdedu has added to her accolades by winning Outstanding Breakthrough Actress at the 23rd Annual Black Reel Awards.

In the category, the actress was nominated with fellow cast member Sheila Atim from The Woman King, Charmaine Bingwa from Emancipation, Anna Diop from Anna, and Dominique Thorne from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The Women King also scored 6 awards including Mbedu’s award, for Best Film, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Score, Best Ensemble and Breakthrough Performance by Thuso.

This movie has opened so many doors for this Hollywood rising actress and acting along Viola Davis has cemented to many people that her craft needs to be taken seriously.

The awards pride themselves in celebrating black excellence across the globe. This year the awards honored four legendary queens, two Film producers Effie T. Brown, Debra Martin Chase, and two leading actresses who have been in the industry for over two decades, Angela Bassett and Kerry Washington as honorary honorees of the Black Reel Awards 2023.

According to statement shared with Variety of The Annual Reel Black Awards, also known as The BOLT were hosted by the Foundation for the Augmentation of African Americans in Film (FAAAF) recognizing the “excellence of African Americans and the cinematic achievements of the African diaspora in the global film industry.” The 23rd annual ceremony, presented in partnership with Idobi Radio, will take place on Feb. 6, 2023.
