Maintaining a routine while working from home

Working from home can be both a blessing and a curse. Yes, it’s wonderful to spend the day in your pyjamas, but it’s also far too easy to sleep in until the very last second before your first Zoom meeting or to feel as though you have nothing to accomplish. Follow these suggestions for working remotely if you feel that you are utterly unmotivated or much less productive than normal.

Create a consistent morning routine

When your commute consists of just walking a few steps down the hall, it can be tempting to become very casual with your waking time. To get on track for the entire day, though, maintaining a consistent wake-up time each day is crucial.

Set up a work station

Working from the comfort of your bed can quickly become uncomfortable as beds aren’t made to work from. Finding a conducive space in your home to work from will increase your productivity and give you an office feel without the rigor of the office.

Depending on your setup, you might also want to invest in a pair of noise-canceling headphones. Between dogs barking and kids running around, they could be an absolute game changer.

Do not multitask

Multiple projects to manage? Pause, then concentrate on one thing at a time. Move on to the next task once you have completed the first one. According to a Stanford University study, persons who multitask do not pay attention, maintain control over their memory, or switch between tasks as well as those who prefer to do one at a time.

Change locations to help your productivity

The advantage of working from home is that you are able to switch up work stations at any given point. Work at your local coffee shop, set up a work station outside or make yourself comfortable on your couch.
