Maintaining a good healthy relationship is hard enough as it is, but a long distance relationship requires you to put in the work.

Keeping fire blazing in a relationship needs effort, understanding and compromises. Fortunately nowadays there are video calls and wi-fi that connects you and your partner for hours in a day. Long are the days that you only talk once a week or only see pictures of your other half, thanks to video calls.

However, although technology makes things easier on long distance relationships, according to Lifehack, technology cannot compensate for everything. You have to open up about the possibilities of getting lonely and yearn for a physical touch.

Healthline blog advises on the following tips to maintain a long distance relationship:

How to communicate

Besides many streams of communication, you need to set up times for video calls, texts and calls. This will help to avoid disappointment when you cannot reach your partner. Communicating things that will work for you and your partner will be the first step of a healthy relationship, however, a spontaneous “I miss you text” or call can be a nice surprise.

Maintaining your independence

Although you’re in a relationship, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep up with your usual routines. Maintaining your independence means going out with your friends, going to the gym and spending time with your family. This will help with the frustration of thinking about your partner and wishing they were around.

Ways to keep your intimacy alive

  1. Have date nights using video chats, dress up nice and have an easy conversation over a glass of wine or mocktail.
  2. You can do phone sex at the comfort of your own place.
  3. Send erotic messages and sexy pictures.

Before involving your partner in anything, Helpline also advises that you talk about boundaries and what the other is comfortable doing. Use modern technology as much as you can for example, shopping together, cooking together and other activities you both like doing.
