Working towards a goal, bettering your community or doing good on your extra time can have a lot of benefits.

Some people would say that they would not be able to do anything without getting paid to do so. However, considering the advantages of volunteering, you will find that there are many personal benefits that one can achieve through volunteering.

According to Help guide, volunteering can help you to make new friends, especially if you are new to a community, it can also help you to learn new skills and  even help you to advance your career. According to Help guide, ‘giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated and provide a sense of purpose.’

Indeed career guide advises of a few benefits of volunteering:

Increasing your social skills

With volunteering you get a chance to have diverse conversations with people from different walks of life. You listen to people’s stories and get to understand social cue’s.

Building relationships

Whether you’re in business or planning to climb a corporate ladder, volunteering allows you to network with new people who might help you in the long run.  You will meet new friend connections and a new circle of trust.

Improves self-esteem

Being active and having a sense of purpose can sometimes help boost your self-esteem and self-confidence. When you do something worthwhile and valuable, you get a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

Learning new skills

Getting outside your comfort zone can sometimes bring out what’s mostly interesting about you, the training and the hands-on experience. It is highly recommended that when you volunteer you find a place that is interesting to you for example, volunteer where you can learn the most and take up skills that can help you in the future.

You can find or search places where you can volunteer closer to where you stay or remotely:

  • Community organizations
  • Churches
  • Art centres
  • Libraries
  • Political organizations
  • Youth centres
  • Activism
  • School projects (e.g tutoring and mentoring)
