Mom, it’s time to de-worm your family

by Bona staff

If the idea of worms leave a sour taste in your mouth, the probability of you being a mom are certain. Perhaps a mom who even loves those sugar coated sour jellies, as much as her kids.

But, let’s be honest, when it comes to the live, squirmy, real deal – you probably willing to run a mile. Or, more sensibly, to your nearest pharmacy to pick up de-worming treatments for the whole family. Because, parasitic worms are happy to take up residence in humans.

The effect of these parasites, if left untreated, range from the unpleasant to the dangerous.

What happens when you have worms?

Worms can enter the body in various ways, depending on the worm type. The way it can enter the body is by the following: poor hygiene conditions, contaminated water or food, larvae in soil and tactile interaction with pets and pet-waste. All opening the door to parasitic infections.

The infection leaves you feeling tired and lethargic, and gives you symptoms such as: nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and weight loss. This is because parasites starve you of the nutrients that your body needs and can cause damage in your intestines. In severe untreated cases, they can obstruct your intestines.

Begin by de-worming bi-annually

Even if you and your family live a relatively sanitised life, it’s easy to pick up an intestinal worm. That’s why the World Health Organisation recommends that all members of the family get de-wormed twice a year.

Precautionary daily measures include:
– Washing hands thoroughly – before cooking and after toilet use
– Eating food that are cleaned and cooked properly
– Drinking boiled or purified water
