Ms Cicely Tyson receives an honourary Oscar

It’s award season and wow we’re just getting more and more excited about people who are actually winning awards. Whether be it local or international awards, South African artists, actors and actresses, performers, and public figures and really being honoured for the amazing work which they are putting out.

And while we’re talking about awards; this year’s Governor awards was a night of honourary Oscars firsts. In case you’ve never heard about The Governors Awards and are asking yourself what on earth we’re going on about, well the Governor’s Awards are basically an evening where the careers of a few entertainment veterans who have not yet won an Academy award would be honoured with an honourary Oscar statuette. Having been run for 10 years we’ve seen various people of colour honoured at the Governor Awards.

While the entertainment industry is slowly giving credit where credit is due when it comes to awarding black entertainers for the amazing hard work which they do, it was an amazing sight to witness Ms. Cicely Tyson, our beloved film granny, being awarded an honourary Oscar. It has been 45 years since her first and only nomination, for ‘Sounder’ in 1972.

What a night, Miss Tyson! We were all emotional seeing #cicelytyson receive her Oscar last night at the #governorsawards. Speeches given by @ava, @tylerperry and @quincydjones were perfect tributes.

Ms. Cively has starred in ‘The Help’ as well as ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman’ among other films and plays. With teary eyes and a story of a hopeful journey which Ms. Cicely knows far too well. She inspired the room by saying, “you need to have a certain amount of faith, and trust, and belief in what you do.” Congratulations to Ms. Cycil on her Honourary Award!

Last night I got to witness the singular, exquisite, vibrant Ms. Cicely Tyson make history by being the first Black woman to receive an #HonoraryOscar. She is a legend who has continually broken barriers and carried herself with dignity and poise. I hold her in the highest regard for the road she has paved for actresses like me. It was a deep privilege to watch her accept this well deserved and long overdue award. ?
