South Africa remembers Steve Biko

by Kwanele Mathebula
Steve Biko

On this day in 1977, the leader of the Black Consciousness movement, Steve Biko, died in police custody. The struggle icon’s spirit and ideas lives on in many lives of ordinary South Africans. In remembrance, South Africans took to social media to mark the 41st anniversary of his death.

Here’s a look at what they had to say.

On this day 41 years ago, naked, shackled and suffering from severe head injuries, the ‘Father of the Black Consciousness Movement’, #SteveBiko, died on the concrete floor of a prison cell at Pretoria Central. We remember Biko’s sacrifice and honour his indelible legacy. pic.twitter.com/vlPBYJcn0p

Steve Biko?? . Assassinated 31 years ago today! . Apart from Nelson Mandela, nobody symbolised the struggle against the apartheid more than Steve Biko. . . The leader of the Black Consciousness movement, he was arrested at a police road block in August 1977 and held under the country’s terrorism legislation. . . He died shortly after arriving at Pretoria prison the following month. . Born on December 18 1946, last year Google commemorated what would have been his 70th birthday with a commemorative Doodle in recognition of his role in the modern history of South Africa. . “On the 70th anniversary of Biko’s birth, we remember his courage and the important legacy he left behind. Thank you, Steve Biko, for dedicating your life to the pursuit of equality for all,” said Google. . . #stevebiko #apartheid #celebrate #humanitarian #biko

Today we remember a South African anti-apartheid activist. An African nationalist and African socialist, he was at the forefront of a grassroots anti-apartheid campaign known as the Black Consciousness Movement during the late 60s and 70s. #SteveBiko #leadyoungsa ✊????

Anti-apartheid martyr, leader of the oppressed, revolutionary and all-round badass.

Assassinated by apartheid fascists but will never under any circumstances perish in our memories.
